The Chengai Jesuit Society is a registered Social Service Organization of the Madurai Jesuit Province of Tamil Nadu in South India. More than 40 persons are engaged in this Society and we have been missioned to work for the uplift, empowerment and liberation of dalits who are considered untouchables and denied of human rights and equal opportunities. Though they constitute 20% of India’s population, they are socially oppressed, economically exploited, politically made powerless and culturally deprived.
Our Society has been in operation since 1992, in the Northern Tamilnadu where there is a high concentration of dalits. Through our schools, hostels and Evening Study programmes we reach out to more than three thousand poor boys and girls.
Our free legal aid and community building programmes have created a movement among the poor to organize themselves to assert their political and economic rights. We have embarked on an ambitious Vocational Skills Training Programme for 300 youth every year.
