  • Loyola Higher Secondary is situated 30 Kilometres south of Kancheepuram in Uthiramerur taluk. It was started in 1995 for the benefit of poor, Dalit students in remote, rural areas. The medium of instruction is Tamil and there are 700 students studying in the school most of whom are first generation learners. Nearly half the number is girls in the school. There are two hostels in the campus for boys and girls and 300 students reside in them. More than half the number of students in the hostels is given free board and lodge and other pay a subsidized amount of Rs 150/ per month. In the school the student s pay a nominal fee for basic amenities as per government norms.
  • As an unaided school the Jesuit Madurai Province finances the programme by way of staff salary, maintenance and subsidizing the hostel expenses. So the institution has to depend on the generous help of donors for growth and development. In spite of various constraints an attempt is made to provide an over all formation to the students.
  • Since most students are slow learners, we try to train them in basics. Language skills of reading and writing are given prime importance. Numerical ability is increased by training in addition, subtraction multiplication and division. Different methods of learning are used to enhance teaching-learning process.
  • Value education is given to all the students. Counselling senior students helps to guide them properly. Computer education is part of the plus one and plus two programme. Other students are given computer literacy. Typing institute in the campus provides opportunities for learning typing. Tailoring and two wheeler mechanism are taught in the evening.
  • Cultural activities help students to develop their potential for singing, dancing and acting. Competitions are held during the cultural week. In all these, a counter cultural stance is stressed. Folk dances, awareness songs and street theatre are taught. Media education is given. Cultural troupe performs on significant occasions.
  • Our students excel in sports and games at the zonal and district levels. Some participate at the state level as well. Physical education and evening games are an attraction with students. Increasing the existing facilities for sports and games will surely contribute to the overall growth of students.
  • Outreach programmes are there by way of evening study centres. Leadership training and social awareness camps are conducted (LASAC). Scout has been started to mould the students as men for others. Our students take to works like repairing badly damaged road to serve the community in a neighbouring village.
  • Loyola School has made a significant difference in the education of rural poor in this area. More than fire hundred students have completed SSLC in the past few years. Though there are many constraints, this investment in enriching human resources is seen as a worthwhile venture.
